Laying the Ghost. By Simon Williams Directed by Steve Lambell This
rather unusual and clever play by the Thame Players was written by actor/writer
Simon Williams and was witty and funny, with some naughty nuances and also a
touch of pathos. Set
in a retirement home, Margot Buchanan, played by the elegant and impressive
Colleen Tudway, is trying to forget her 65th birthday. Her best friend is the
dotty psychic excellently played by Val Cockayne. Sir Leo Buchanan is her
ex-husband who visits her on her birthday. Tony Long was the dashing and
debonair Sir Leo, on the whole competently portrayed although a little over
ebullient at times. Katie Sanderson was convincing as Sir Leo's second wife and
Mrs Kidd was well played by Pat Shepherd. Newcomer Katie Ell was Sadie Croft,
Sir Leo's latest paramour. She appeared a little hesitant in the first act but
by the second act she had settled into the role and was most convincing. Darren
Topping was hilarious as the Superman kissagram. The
second act where Sir Leo has died and is now a ghost could have proved
difficult. However, the cast carried off the illusion professionally and the
ending was a delightful surprise. The innovative set was what we have come to
expect from Thame Players, cleverly lit to enhance the scenes. Again
The Players have chosen a play which was both entertaining and
thought-provoking. Rita
