Pygmalion By George Bernard Shaw Performance Dates 4th to 8th March 2008 Directed by Simon Baynes The classic story (made popular by the musical "My Fair Lady") of social mobility in Edwardian society. Eliza Doolittle takes elocution lessons from Professor Higgins in order to become a lady, while her dustman father is catapulted into the middle class by an unexpected gift of money. The drama is enhanced by the feisty character of Liza, who, far from being a squashed cabbage leaf taken out of the gutter, is strong enough to stand up to Higgins. Cast includes: Mark Williams - Higgins (30-40), self-satisfied, complacent, rather a bully, no social graces, wedded to his profession of linguistics. Ian Clare - Pickering (30-60), his kindly friend, also a linguist. Steve Lambell - Doolittle (50-60), dustman, cheerful, likeable rogue. Frances Lord - Mrs Pearce (30-60), housekeeper, respectable, not above ticking Higgins off for slovenly habits and language. Alison Hulett - Eliza (20-30), street flower-seller, full of proper pride, articulate, intelligent, seething with suppressed emotions. Val Cockayne - Mrs Higgins (60-70), kind-hearted, but severe towards her son; wins Eliza's heart. Jamie Burridge - Freddy Wynsford-Hill June Garland - Mrs Eynsford-Hill Julia Roitt - Clara Eynsford-Hill Olivia House - Parlourmaid There are a few cameo parts, and minor parts that can be doubled.
