The
Lady’s Not For Burning SET
in a West Country house this story of mediaeval times written by Christopher
Fry, enabled the Thame Players under the masterful direction of Simon Baynes to
once again demonstrate their versatility. Not
an easy play to perform, with a dark side with talk of hanging and threats of
the burning of a witch called Jennet, played with sensitivity by Clare Frost.
However, the group offered a lighter side by concentrating
on the wit and humour threaded through this interesting play. Tim Proctor playing Captain Thomas Mendip gave an excellent portrayal of a man tired of the world and wishing to be rid of it. Richard Worland played Herbie Tyson the Mayor convincingly and Mark Williams gave a sterling performance as Richard the clerk with both humour and sensitivity. Nick Wilkes and John Poole were Nicholas and Humphrey, two warring brothers complementing each other perfectly, supported by a very strong cast who together made this an interesting evening. The authentic costumes, especially the women’s, were superb and the impressive set designed by Robert Duncan and constructed by Steve Lambell enhanced the period of the play especially well. Another
triumph for the Thame Players. Rita
